The Romanian Gendarmerie is organised on a military basis, all over the national territory, and comprises in its structure :

  • The National Gendarmerie Headquarters
  • The Gendarmerie Headquarters of Bucharest municipality
  • The Special Brigade of Intervention - to maintain and re-establish public order in Bucharest and on whole territory if needed.
  • Territorial Gendarmerie Headquarters - eight over the territory, each of them comprising.
    • Gendarmerie district Headquarters ;
    • gendarmerie battalions ;
    • gendarmerie detachments, companies, sections, platoons, guard posts and squads.
  • Training centres - there are five in the whole country
  • Educational institutes
    • The Military School of non-commissioned officers ;
    • The Training Centre of Gendarmerie.
  • Special units (to meet withimportant objectives)
  • Logistics base
  • Repair base

The Romanian Gendarmerie personnel

  • The personnel of the Romanian Gendarmerie consist of officers, warrant officers, non-commissioned officers, gendarmes employed on contact, conscripted young men and civilian employees ;
  • The military staff of the Romanian Gendarmerie consist of the graduates of the Military Education Institutes ;
  • For some activities specialists with corresponding training in other field of activitycorresponding to the legal terms, can be appointed.
  • The training of Gendarmerie officers is achieved in the military high education institutes belonging to the Ministry of the Interior (The Police Academy), the Ministry of National Defence, as well as through the network of the civilian high education institutes.

The Romanian Gendarmerie

The Romanian Gendarmerie is the state specialised military institution, part of the Ministry of the Interior, who had been organised one hundred and fifty one years ago. At the moment, the Gendarmeire has the following prerogatives :

  • It garantees the security of the objective assets and the valuables of particular importance for the defence of the country and the activity of the state (the Government, the Parliament) for economy, science, culture and art, the security of the buildings of the diplomatic missions or of some economic agencies and representations, as well as the security of residences of some international organisations that carry out activities on the territory of our country, under the Government decision.
  • It garantees the security of the transport of some important valuables (money, credit security checks or other value papers, precious metals and stones, scientific, technical, culture and art values), as well as the transport of weapons, ammunitions, explosive materials, drugs, other toxic or radioactive materials or any dangerous material or substances.
  • It garantees, together with other public authorities, themaintenance of order at meetings and demonstrations;
  • It garantees, together with the Police and other structures or the Ministry of the Interior, the restoring of public order in thecases ofserious incidents.
  • It performs, together with the Police, missions to maintain public order, to prevent and fight against offences and other infringements of the legal regulation in force;
  • It accompanies, together with the Police, the specialised trains, taking the necessary steps for security and order in the marshalling yards and railway stations.
  • It performs together with the other competent state institutions missions of protection of the high Romanian and foreign officials during their stay in Romania, as well as the security of the places where they carry out their activitie,s and of their residence.
  • It performs, together with the other specialised state institutions, missions of prevention, neutralisation and eradication of terrorist and red-herring policy acts over the territory of Romania.
  • It takes part in the security and protection of the secret mail all over the Romanian territory.
  • It performs public order missions during the neutralisation of the suspect objects that could represent a danger to public security.
  • It performs, together with the Police the fire-fighting forces and in co-operation with units belonging to the National Defence Ministry (civil defence) and other legal structures, rescue and evacuation activities for the persons and assets threatened by fire, explosions as well as limitation and prevention of the effects of such events;
  • It performs, together with the Police and other legal public institutions, missions of pursuit and capture of the fugitives, deserters and of other persons about whom there are solid indication that they areabout to commit a crime, or they have already committed it, or that they avoid brought to court.
  • It takes part, at the Romanian President's request and with the approval of the Parliament, outside the national territory, with staff and equipment, in setting up the international forces meant to perform the actions of public order and the humanitarian operations, while performing these missions the participating as those of the National Defence Ministry forces which perform missions abroad.
  • It performs any other tasks assigned by the law.

During mobilisation and time of war, the Romanian Gendarmerie,as a member of the armed forces, performs the missions for the security and protection of some objectives, for the defence of some particular places and other tasks assigned by the law.
